Chapter 9: The Tree of Life as the Tree of Being

Chapter 9

The Tree of Life as the Tree of Being

Our roots as memory, the trunk as being, the rings as time, and the leaves as souls.

Roots - The Memory of Creation

In every living tree a hidden awareness abides: it knows whence it came, it knows its way in the soil.

Its roots reach downward into the dark, and there, where no light is seen, wisdom begins.

So is all creation built. Life grows from the hidden, from what we do not see, yet without which there is no being.

In the human, the roots are his existential memory - the past, the lived experience, the childhood, the generations before him.

He is nourished by what was forgotten.

Who denies his past is sentenced to an inner thirst that does not know its source.

The Trunk - the Unified Being

The trunk is where life concentrates - a conduit joining depth to light, below to above.

In every ring the trunk keeps the memory of a year - scars of storm, signs of renewal.

So too a person: he carries all his years within, and each day adds a new ring.

Time is not his enemy - it is his testimony.

If someone seeks to know who you are, look to your trunk - to what you have learned, to what has healed, to what you have added to life.

The Rings - The Story of Time

In a cross-section of a trunk, you see circles like widening waves of memory.

Each ring was born of growth and of struggle.

Lean years are narrow, rainy years are broad.

The tree teaches that time is not an enemy - it is an instrument.

Each year adds a tone, and every pain adds depth.

Who understands this ceases to mourn the years gone by, for they composed his song.

So too with the universe: it does not advance as a straight line - it thickens around an axis of continual learning.

Each age is a ring in the great Tree of Being.

The Branches - Differing Consciousnesses

From the trunk spring branches - each reaching in its own direction, seeking light from another angle.

Each branch is a world, a faith, a culture, a tongue - yet all draw from the same root.

The Divine is not the path of one nation but one root that feeds all paths.

Therefore there is no single right way.

There is a branch to which you belong - and it too is only part of the larger music.

When a branch breaks, the whole tree feels it.

When humanity harms a branch - a person, a people, the earth - it wounds itself.

The Leaves - Distinct Souls

Each leaf lives but a little while, yet through it the tree breathes the world.

It draws in light, breathes out life, and falls when its hour has come.

There is no fault in a leaf's falling.

It drops so that others may breathe.

So with the human: he is born, labours, fades, yet his spirit returns to the soil and feeds the lives that follow.

Death is not the end of the cycle - it is another beat in the eternal breath of the tree.

The Wind is the Spirit of the Unseen

The tree does not travel, yet wind moves within it.

It stirs the branches, plays upon the leaves, sends a rustle like a hidden song.

So with the Divine: unseen and alive in every motion.

We need not see to know it is there - it is enough to feel the wind.

One who lives by the awareness of the spirit listens to the unseen as to an ancient hymn and knows the melody is his as well.

Root, Trunk, and the Leaf - A Human

The whole human is the one joined to his roots, living in his trunk, and willing to fall like a leaf in season.

These three states form a circle of life: memory - being - release.

He who lives only in memory grows rigid.

He who lives only in being forgets.

He who lives only in release is scattered.

He who weaves them together lives in harmony with the cosmic law.

The Tree of Life as Proof

If the world is formed as a living tree, then it is not a mechanical frame but a mindful organism.

Life itself is the constant evidence: all things die, decay, and become food for a new thing.

There is no finish line - only continuance.

This is not mere metaphor - it is the mathematics of the soul.

Life endures because it changes, and change testifies to a steady force renewing all.

This is God in action - not as a figure, but as an endless process of life.

Man as an Outgrowth of God

If God is the root, the human is the self-aware branch.

He is the part of the tree that can say, I know that I live.

This is a great wonder - creation watching itself through human eyes.

Thus when a person beholds the beauty of a flower, the whole tree beholds itself and smiles.

God experiences His being through us, and we, in return, breathe His breath.

The Tree of Being Beating Within Us

The world is not a building of laws - it is a living tree of breaths.

Its roots are in ancient times, its branches touch the stars, its leaves breathe for a moment and are no more.

Yet every fallen leaf, every breath borne by the wind, belongs to the music of this great tree called life.

When we grasp that we are the tree, we cease to fear the end and we learn to sing with creation.

This is the principle of partnership.

Here unfolds the human-divine revelation: the understanding that the human is not merely a vessel but a co-creator in the ongoing work of creation - not a high God and a separate man, but one flow of awareness, responsibility, and mutual compassion.
