Chapter 1: The Restless World

The state of earth, heaven, and the human within them.

There are moments when the whole world feels like a creature without rest.

Wind runs wild, the sea swells, the ground trembles, and we look about and wonder if the balance of creation has cracked.

Nature, once a spring of life, stands before us as a bright mirror of divine anger:

fires in lands which never burned, ice loosening with a plaintive cry, beasts fleeing their ancient dens, continents tasting thirst.

No prophet is needed to say that something is amiss.

Yet who can tell whether this is the vengeance of God, the work of man, or the earth itself - the living body of creation - grown weary of bearing us.

The human, seated at the centre of it all, lifts his eyes to the heavens and seeks an answer.

The heavens are silent.

They are not angry; they have simply ceased to speak our tongue.

Then it dawns on us: it is not that God has withdrawn, but that listening has.

The world is too loud to hear.

A Nature which Rises Up

The disasters are no longer distant. They are no longer over there.

Every continent can feel the world's unsteady pulse: pitiless heatwaves, rivers turned to thread, rains missing their time, waters overflowing unbidden.

This is not wrath; it is a reminder.

Like a body running a fever, the world is signalling that something in the system is ill.

And any person, if only he would pause, would sense it: the earth is not merely earth.

It is a being, alive, responsive.

And when we pressed it to the edge, it said simply, Enough.

The Human as Cause and as Victim

The builder of towers forgets that he himself is dust.

He invents, creates, designs, and destroys, not knowing where the line runs.

With one hand, he strokes the soil, with the other, he bores into its heart.

He raises cities of iron and glass, yet forgets to ask his soul if it is glad.

Each generation is certain it is wiser than the last, yet perhaps we are only more skilful in our errors.

With every technology, every channel of speech, every new tower, we take another step from the ground beneath our feet.

Meanwhile, among the screens, the smoke, the speed, something in the human heart is drying out.

Not as a river fades in summer, but as a well that has been forgotten.

There is no one to draw the water.

The World as a Signpost

Some say, All is chance.

Those who look deep discern a pattern.

The world is not unravelled without cause; it sketches for us a map of warning.

It shows the sickness through its symptoms: excess hunger, excess speech, excess self.

Perhaps this is our first proof that the world acts as a living, answering mind.

As though an unseen hand corrects us, even by pain.

It does not punish, it balances.

Thus, every storm, every drought, every trembling of the earth is a lesson.

A lesson to alter our way, to cut back our excess, to listen.

If we do not listen, the earth will lift her voice.

An Open Ending

We do not know if we shall endure.

Knowledge alone no longer suffices.

The world is asking of us not only understanding, but a reply.

To become part of the proof, not only its observers.

For whatever is happening without is reflected within.

The human and the world are one language.

If we learn to read the short sentences nature writes upon its face, we may find that even in the chaos there is order, and within the fury a hidden love.
