Chapter 4: The Human as a Tree
The hidden roots, the common trunk, and the branching paths.
Man thinks himself set apart from the world.
He stands upright, speaks, fashions, and passes.
Yet beneath his feet, in the same soil, rests the system to which he belongs - one vast tree, not wholly seen.
It is not one tree of a forest, but the Tree of Life itself: roots in the depths of creation, its trunk as time, and its branches all living beings.
We, the passing leaves, tremble in the wind and believe we are independent.
The Roots - What Was and is Unseen
The roots are hidden, yet they are the source of strength.
So too man: he is nourished by earlier generations, by vanishing memories, by deeds he never knew were done for him.
Every breath we draw leans upon thousands before it.
Roots are a steady memory of essence.
He who forgets his roots loses his inward food.
He withers - not for lack of sun, but from severing himself from the ground.
The scriptures knew it long ago:
"for the tree of the field is man's life" (Deuteronomy 20:19).
This line is not only poetry - it is a measure.
A man is weighed not by height, but by the depth of his roots.
The Trunk - Binding all Life Together
Every tree bears one trunk that joins all branches.
It is the centre, the living pillar, the way water rises and life descends.
In the spirit it is the axis of time, the axis of awareness,
carrying every generation as a single thread.
The single person is but one ring in the trunk.
Each year adds a ring, and each ring keeps the memory of those before.
The world does not advance as a straight line - it thickens about a centre.
So with consciousness: every experience is carved into the shared trunk of humanity,
and when one person grows, he widens the circle for us all.
The Branches - Ways of Life
From the trunk spring many branches, unlike one another.
Each branch thinks it is a world of its own, one bears fruit, one breaks, one is pulled toward the light - yet all are joined.
Wars, creeds, nations are branches of the same trunk.
Therefore every hatred is a self-wound,
for he who harms another branch cuts the flow of his own life.
He who understands this ceases to see an enemy and finds a mirror.
The tree does not compete with itself.
Leaves - The Fleeting Moments of Being
Leaves are what we take to be life itself - they breathe, quiver, fall.
They are passing, yet through them the world breathes.
Man is a leaf on the tree of time.
He drops, yet his essence returns to the soil,
and from it new leaves rise.
He who knows he is a leaf is neither proud nor despairing.
He knows he belongs to an unending process,
the eternal cycle of life and death, giving and receiving.
Counsel between Root and Leaf
Where roots run deep, leaves do not fear the wind.
So with man: when he is joined to his essence, no outer storm will uproot him.
The root gives security, the branch flexibility, and the leaf gives awareness.
Life is the balance between them.
One must know when to be a root - steady,
when to be a branch - supple,
and when to be a leaf - changing and light.
The Human as a Walking Tree
Man is the tree that learned to walk.
His roots are no longer only in soil, but in memory, in heart, in faith.
Yet he bears the same inward form - a trunk of experience, branches of thought, leaves of deed.
When he acts in harmony, he is a blossoming tree in the inward world.
When he denies his roots, he is like an uprooted tree - standing, yet without life.
The Tree of Life and the Tree of Knowledge
Two trees are named in Eden - the Tree of Life and the Tree of Knowledge.
Man chose knowledge - curiosity, knowing, choosing, while forgetting life - the quiet of being itself.
Ever since we walk toward their balance: to weave life into knowledge and knowledge into life.
Knowledge without life is cold.
Life without knowledge is blind.
Wholeness is the united tree where the two trunks are rooted in one another.
The Tree as Proof
If the world is a living tree and man one of its branches, then God is not separated from the tree - He is the water within it.
Without Him there is no flow, no growth, no song.
Hence a deep proof is born: God is not far in the heavens - He is the flow within every cell of being,
the voice among the roots, the breath among the leaves, life itself in motion.
The Tree of Understanding
He who is joined to the Tree of Life knows: he is not master of creation, he is a partner in it.
He is not separate from nature; he is its outgrowth.
The more he learns, the more he yearns to remember what the root has always known - there is no true growth without connection.
When we grasp that we are but a small leaf on a single great tree, we cease to fear the fall,
for all that drops returns to feed new life.
And so we too become part of the greatest proof that life itself is born from a cycle of love.
